Using Crafts in Speech Therapy

Hi Friends!

I have bad news…August is here, and some of you will be headed back to work next week! For those of you in private practice, many of your clients will be back to all-day learning, which can be tough for our little friends to adjust to (which means we really have to bring our A-game to those sessions).

As we gear up for another awesome school year, let’s spice up those first few sessions post-summer with a fun twist: crafts! 🖍️✂️

Craft activities aren’t just fun—they’re super effective for bonding and hitting those speech therapy goals right from the start. Whether you’re working on speech sounds, language skills, social interactions, or cognitive development, crafts can do wonders.
Looking for a fun and easy back-to-school craft for your next session? Check out my Back to School Stuffer Craft Bundle!

In case you're not totally sold on using crafts in your speech therapy sessions, here's four very good reasons to give them a try! 👇🏼

Building Connections:
  • Crafting together creates a chill vibe where students feel relaxed and ready to open up. It’s a fantastic way to build trust and set a positive tone for future sessions.
Boosting Communication:
  • Crafts naturally get the conversation flowing. You can toss in vocab related to the project, practice following instructions, and work on speaking and listening skills—all in a fun, low-pressure setting.
Nailing Your Goals:
  • Crafts are like Swiss Army knives for therapy goals. You can tweak activities to fit different ages, skills, and targets—whether it’s sequencing, using specific sounds, or mastering social skills.
Level Up:
  • Have older kids? Have particularly young kids? Crafts allow for a lot of versatility. Whether it's the actual process, the materials used, or their freedom to go “off-book”, one craft can get you through Pre-K through middle school easily!

Crafts are a great way to target multiple areas your students need to grow in and are a great way to connect with new-to-you clients! In case you need another craft option for back to school, check out my Back to School Articulation Stuffer Craft  🖍️

Happy speeching!
