Engaging Strategies for Teaching WH-Questions in Speech Therapy

Hey there, SLP friend! 👋🏼

Let’s talk about something that’s a staple in our therapy sessions but can sometimes feel a bit... repetitive: teaching kids how to ask and answer questions. Specifically, those classic WH-questions—who, what, when, where, why, and how.

We all know that mastering these questions is crucial for our kiddos. It boosts their ability to engage in conversations, seek out information, and express themselves more clearly. But how do we keep it fresh and engaging session after session?

Why Focus on WH-Questions?

Teaching WH-questions isn't just about ticking a box on an IEP goal sheet. It's about giving our students the tools they need to:

  • Initiate and maintain conversations: Asking questions shows interest and keeps dialogues going.

  • Seek information: Whether it's asking for help or learning something new, questions are key.

  • Express thoughts and feelings: Answering questions helps kids share their experiences and emotions.

By focusing on these skills, we're setting our students up for success both in and out of the classroom.

Making It Interactive

So, how do we make teaching WH-questions less of a chore and more of a blast? Here are some tried-and-true strategies:

1. Use Visual Aids

Visuals are a game-changer. They provide context and help students grasp abstract concepts. Think picture cards, storyboards, or even simple drawings.

2. Incorporate Movement

Get those bodies moving! Use activities that require students to move around while asking or answering questions. For example, place question cards around the room and have students walk to the correct answer.

3. Role-Playing Scenarios

Create real-life situations where students can practice. Whether it's "playing store" or "going to the doctor," role-playing makes learning practical and fun.

4. Group Discussions

Encourage students to ask each other questions. This not only practices their skills but also builds social interaction.
