An Easy Themed Speech Therapy Session | Penguin Theme!
Happy day friends!
Just checking in to share a fun therapy theme for you during this dreary January (is it colder than normal, or is it just my thin Louisiana blood?).
It’s cute.
It’s furry.
It’s a universal hit.
It’s PENGUINS! 🐧
Hear me out on this. It’s cold and we could all use a cuteness break during our speech sessions.
Not sold?
Let me show you what I’ll be doing this week to tie it all together!
FIRST
I use a book to introduce the theme. We look at the cover and guess what the book will be about. For some of these books, the only picture on the cover may be of an actual penguin, and that’s ok! Discuss what the penguin looks like, what it’s doing, what we know about penguins, and what we DON’T know. (Pro tip: Is your library low on books about penguins? Don’t fret. I simply bring up the book being read on YouTube and mute the sound while we read at our own pace!)
Book Ideas:
-Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers
-Penguin by Polly Dunbar
-The Emperor’s Egg by Martin Jenkins
-Penguin Problems by Jory John
THEN
We practice our sounds or language using my Winter Stuffer Craft! Students will "stuff" penguins into an igloo as they practice their speech sounds and language skills. Targets are included on penguins. Keep those hands busy and having fun!
Multiple goals in multiple areas? No problem.
The bundle includes targets for articulation AND language:
• Articulation targets: CH, SH, TH, F, V, S, Z, R, Vocalic R, J, L, K, and G
• Language targets: WH Questions, Synonyms, Antonyms, Homophones, Yes/No Questions, Describing, Pronouns (his/her/their), and Categories
BONUS: Movement Break Activity
Still shaking out those holiday break wiggles? Set a timer and at intervals, let your kiddos do some movement breaks all in the penguin theme:
-WADDLE like a penguin
-SWIM in the water
-JUMP and DIVE for fish like a penguin
-SHIVER and SHAKE in the cold snow
-RUN from the whales
I hope you and your students love this fun and easy penguin themed speech lesson plan! Happy speeching!
