Going 'Bagless' as a Speech Therapist

Hi friends! 👋🏼

I’ve got a quick therapy tip for you today if the idea of carrying a million toys around with you just isn't your thing.

One of the best things about being in this field is the amazing variety of kids and families we get to work with. But let’s be real—not every family has the same toys or resources we keep in our therapy bags… and that’s totally okay!

We are NOT about gatekeeping speech and language with fancy, expensive toys. Nope, not us!

That’s why I always have a few tricks up my sleeve. While fun toys can definitely grab a child’s attention, we also need to be flexible and confident in our ability to go bagless when needed. (Psst… if you want to learn more about bagless therapy, check out the my Early Intervention Academy!)

Easy, No-Toy Therapy Ideas 🧸🥁

1. Water Play in the Sink
Turn on a slow stream of water, pull up a chair, and let the magic happen! Kids can wash their hands, feet, or even small household items. Add some dish soap for bubbles or hide little objects in the water for them to find and say “hi!” to. SO many language opportunities, and best of all? It’s free!

2. Movement Games
No props? No problem! Simple games like hide and seek or tag are amazing for turn-taking, following directions, and engagement. Plus, kids get to move—which means they’re happy, and you get their best attention!

3. Go for a “Drive”
Place the child in your (or the parent’s) lap and go for a pretend drive! Speed up, slow down, go over bumpy roads, or even “CRASH!” while practicing fun exclamations, environmental sounds, and core vocabulary. They’ll love it, and you’ll sneak in tons of speech and language practice!

4. Stacking & Hiding Games
Grab plastic cups, Tupperware, or whatever you can find and start stacking! You can also hide objects inside and underneath to target requesting, labeling, and turn-taking. It’s a simple, engaging way to keep little hands and minds busy.

See what I mean? The possibilities are endless! You don’t need a therapy bag full of toys to have an effective and engaging session. Try ditching the bag for a day and see how creative you and your little clients can get!
