Quick Tips for Early Intervention Success
Hey speech friend!
Back in graduate school, what was your dreaded area of therapy? For SO MANY students and therapists, I hear that it's Early Intervention.
So how can we set ourselves up for success when it comes to Early Intervention sessions when our clients can be so unpredictable?
Here's a few of my most successful tips 👇🏼
- Keep Their Interests in Mind: Your client loves ducks? Incorporate ducks into your books, do duck themed sensory bins, use songs with ducks in them-the possibilities are endless! Take it from me, trying to redirect a toddler from something they love NEVER turns out well.
- Keep it Play-Based: Do you want to sit at a table and be drilled with flashcards of words you don't know yet? Would you prefer to sit down with a friend of yours as they help you with an activity of your choice? Exactly. Play is the single most natural activity we can do with children and it empowers them to use language in their daily life!
- Keep Parents Involved: Think of the hours you spend with your client. Now think of how many the parents spend. If they aren't involved and keeping the progress going, you can't do it alone! Easy ways to do this? Debrief each session at the beginning and end, provide lots of visuals and handouts, and give support when they need it by modeling and coaching instead of taking over a session!
If you use these tips in your early intervention sessions, let me know how they go! I love working with the EI crowd and hope that with the use of these tips, you do too. If you're needing more help with this population, check out my Early Intervention Academy for SLPs!
