Completing Speech Therapy Crafts When Its Hard to Sit Still

Let's face it, not every kiddo we have is going to sit through a table activity or craft.  But, that doesn't mean we want to exclude them from having fun in our speech room.  We can help make it an enjoyable and successful experience (for the both of you) by putting  visual and sensory strategies in place.

  • If you have a wiggler, try having them sit on a dynamic seat cushion or sit on an exercise ball at the table.
  • If you have a kiddo who's impulsive, make sure to only have necessities on the table and keep them out of reach while only giving them an item that pertains to the direction you gave (and after you have already given the direction).
  • If you have a kiddo that has difficulty staying on task or completing a task, utilize a star chart, visual schedule or a first/then chart so that they are able to see the steps involved, know what to expect next, and can work toward a goal. These strategies worked well for me while completing this Christmas activity for fricatives. Good luck and let me know if these strategies help you during your next craft! Happy speeching! :)
