Make Carryover Easy with the Help of Parent Coaching

Hi friends!

Picture this for a moment with me…

You've been working with an Early Intervention child for a few weeks/months but nothing seems to be changing in between sessions. You think to yourself, “This child is engaged during sessions, the parents seem to be taking in the strategies I recommend, and they have all the tools necessary to succeed…”

SO WHAT'S THE DEAL?!

The deal is probably that carryover isn't happening. And who has the most time with those kiddos to facilitate that progress? Unfortunately, not us.

So let's find a way to make those other hours count too with the help of parent coaching!
Here's a sample schedule for you to use as an example 👇🏼

First 5-10 Minutes:
Recap of client progress since last meeting and any concerns brought up by parent

10-15 Minutes:
Introduce new strategy, model strategy we're currently working on, or addressing parent concern by direct therapy and modeling

10-15 Minutes:
Allow parent/caregiver to try strategy during natural daily activity of play, meal time, bath time, even errands! Provide feedback in the moment or after if the parent is working through the situation well.

10 Minutes:
Reflect with the parent. Ask them what they felt competent in, what did and did not work, and give positive praise for what they did well.

Last 5-10 Minutes:
Give visual aids and a tactile reminder of what they will work on, when, and the goal for frequency
Carryover is exactly why I give tangible handouts and homework that parents need to participate in as well. I always make sure my carryover pages include:
  • Easy, digestible information for parents
  • Clear directions for home practice
  • Accountability pages
  • A resource than encourages back and forth communication between parent and therapist

I hope this post makes tackling carryover and helping parents to practice carryover more often!
